4. BRIEF PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Geothermal potential of Višegrad can be divided into two sources:
Underground waters
The urban core of the Municipality of Višegrad is located at the mouth of two rivers, Drina and Rzav. This results in the alluviums containing a large quantity of underground waters at low depths (10-15 m) and a relatively easy exploitation of the underground water. The Andrićgrad complex of an area of about 30,000 m2 was built recently at the mouth of the rivers Drina and Rzav. Geothermal potential of underground waters is used for Andrićgrad heating and cooling by water-to-water type heat pumps. Water pumps were installed in 2013, and geothermal energy of underground waters has been successfully used since then. Seven wells were drilled at this location for the needs of Andrićgrad heating and cooling, with the average flow of 8 l/s and the average entering water temperature of 12˚C. These capacities are sufficient to heat and cool the facilities of this complex.
Based on the above experience and explorations, it can be assumed that there is a very large unused potential of geothermal energy of underground waters at this location and locations immediately along the above rivers, in a quantity of minimum 200 l/s of underground water, which is sufficient for about 4 MW capacity for heating and cooling of facilities.
Thermal water
In the immediate vicinity of Višegrad, there is Vilina Vlas Spa with four sources of thermal water. Total capacity of all four sources is 120 l/s under the S exploitation model. There is an enormous surplus of geothermal potential, because all water from the sources, even after being used in the spa, can be used as a source of geothermal energy. All waters from the sources that are currently being exploited, about 30 l/s, are released into a stream which flows into the river Drina after 2,000 m. Thermal water temperature ranges from 31 to 34˚C. Establishment of a heating system (pipeline) to bring the water into the town would enable using this potential for heating of buildings, hot water in the households and cooling. The spa is 6 km from the town, so the temperature in the heating system would drop by 1 to 2˚C, depending on the quality of insulation of the heating system. Also, it should be noted that no particular power would be needed to bring the thermal water, due to a difference in altitude between the position of the sources and the town of Višegrad. In view of the above, it can be calculated that thermal potential of spa water and underground waters below the urban area of the Municipality, by using the water-to-water type pumps, has the following heating capacities:

Vilina Vlas Spa 12.6 MW
Underground waters 5.9 MW.
The sum of these capacities is sufficient to heat and cool about 154,000 m2 of facilities
The heat pump heating system in the Municipality of Višegrad should be established gradually, in several stages. Priority should be given to public facilities with high heating costs, in order to achieve maximum impact in the beginning.
The heating system of the Municipality of Višegrad should be made so as to introduce the thermal water from the Višegrad spa to the urban and suburban areas by means of a pipeline. The use of thermal water and underground sources should be combined depending on the position and heating needs of the settlements.
It is proposed to install five water pump casings of the capacity of 3-4 MW (5-6 water pumps per casing), to use the available geothermal potential.
The project provides for investments in infrastructure and machines. The expected time-frame for project implementation is 2 years.
All waste waters of the spa center can be used in full, and their geothermal potential would be insignificantly reduced.

The Municipality of Višegrad Geothermal Potential Analysis was prepared by experts and clearly confirms the possibility to use the thermal and underground waters for heating and cooling of facilities in the territory of Višegrad, based on previous explorations and experiences.

replacement of heating installations, building of secondary pipelines and installation of fan coils 5,112,919 euro
6.2 Planned sources of financing
Mutual relations between the Municipality and the partner would be regulated by a public-private partnership agreement

The Municipality would provide locations for building and necessary building permits.

7. Has physical location for project implementation been identified
The location of geothermal water is Višegrad Spa, 6 km from the urban part of the town, while the location of underground waters, replacement of heating installations, building of secondary pipelines and installation of fan coils is in the urban zone of the town. The pipeline would cover the Višegrad Spa-town centre direction.
8. Have the activities on project implementation already started
Prepared Municipality of Višegrad Geothermal Potential Analysis and project entered in the NAMA Registry.
